Cape Home Educators

STARTING OUT

Research: When starting out an investigation into educating your child at home, we recommend that you do plenty of research.  There is a wealth of information available, so don’t make decisions hastily.  The best source is the internet – try a search engine with “homeschool”, and also look at these websites:

We have a link on this site with numerous home education pages

Join CHE and link up with local home educators, benefit from locally organized events, support groups, and meet other home educators to learn what works for various families.  CHE is also negotiating with the Education Department on home educators behalf, so needs a broad base of support.  It is also to your advantage not to be isolated should any legal difficulties arise.

Read:  We recommend several books (sourced from Oikos, Amazon, Kalahari, TCE)

·        The successful family home schooling handbook, by Raymond & Dorothy Moore.

·        The Heart of Home Schooling, by Christopher Klicka Available from Linda koetsier@flotron.co.za 021 883 2924 or Leendert 012 330 1337

·        You can teach your child successfully, by Ruth Beechick

·        The 3 R’s, by Ruth Beechick

·        A Living Education – A handbook for South African Homeschoolers by Wendy Young  Visit her website at www.gentlelearning.co.za for a full review and to order.

·        For the children’s sake by Susan Schaeffer Macauley

·        Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson

Decide on a curriculum/ method of home schooling.  Look at many curricula – there are all types – structured, unit studies, unstructured etc – and ask suppliers for catalogues (see our curriculum providers list).  For help on assessing your and your children’s learning style, contact Dynamis 082 5741433 (Martie du Plessis)

We recommend that you join the South African Legal Defence Fund,  Pestalozzi Trust.  Should you run into any problems with the legal aspect of home educating your child, the trust will be able to inform you of your rights, assist you in dealing with difficulties.   See www.pestalozzi.org.
