Our 2007 prizegiving was held at the Castle of Good
Hope. It was a wonderful day with more homeschoolers attending than anticipated.
A treasure hunt was organised for the children. They were split into groups
and then had to “hunt” for clues. The search was unbelievably
educational and lots of fun.
After lunch and a free ride on the 100 year old horse cart the certificates
were handed out. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work during
2007. Prizegiving is always an event we look forward to!
Points of interest about the Castle:
The Castle is the oldest surviving building in South Africa. It was built
between 1666 and 1679.
For nearly a century, the Captain’s Tower was the highest building
in the Cape.
In 1969 a comprehensive restorations process began; it was largely completed
by 31 March 1993.
Restored to its former glory, the Castle represents Dutch, French and
English building styles.
The ochre was on the walls reduces glare from sunlight and reflects less
heat.
The slate used as paving came from quarries on Signal Hill and Robben
Island. Wood was brought from Hout Bay. The mortar was made by firing
sea-shells in kilns to obtain lime. This was mixed with crushed shells
and sand to create extremely strong cement.
All the beams are of Baltic pine, shipped from Europe to the Cape during
the original construction between 1666 and 1679.
